Over the last year the Education Department has been working diligently to grow our Matrix School of Theatre inclusion program.  Matrix received funding to begin our “Arts for All” initiative with the main goal of including students at all levels of abilities, in particularly children with disabilities, in our playwriting, puppetry, and performance classrooms.

As part of our initiative we were able to bring in two well-known inclusion experts to train our staff and teaching artist on ways to create effective inclusive classrooms.

In January, Matrix Theatre Company had the privilege of facilitating an Inclusive training with Suzanne Costello, Artistic Co-Director of Minneapolis’ Stuart Pimsler Dance & Theater.  Suzanne led our teaching artists through group discussions, writing exercises and movement explorations that can be used to engage students of varying needs and abilities.  During the first week of February, we also welcomed Judith Snow, a social innovator and an advocate for Inclusion who came to Matrix from Canada to facilitate Inclusion training on ways to find gifts in the diversities that are considered challenging in typical culture.

We are very excited to be able to provide these opportunities for our staff and teaching artists, and we hope to be able to continue the growth of our inclusion program.

This winter semester, Matrix will be providing classes and workshops for Harms Elementary, Cody Detroit Institute of Technology, JARC, the Detroit Institute for Children, and many other schools and organizations in the Metro Detroit community.  It is an honor to be able to continue furthering our services to more children and families in Detroit and we hope that our inclusion initiative will continue to serve as a tool to bridge some of the barriers that exclude children with disabilities in our community.
